Long ago in Italy there lived an AI engineer named Geppetto. He developed smart assistants, facial recognition systems, natural language applications, Computer vision applications, wearable health monitors and so on. When he worked, Geppetto felt happy.

But when he rested, a sad feeling came over him. “Ah!” he would think, “all my life and no child to call my own!” So, one day, he started working on a groundbreaking project. He built a humanoid robot whose physical structure mimicked a 6-year-old boy made of rosewood.

The robot was incorporated with a Generative AI (GenAI) Large Language Model (LLM) that could learn, adapt, and communicate like a human child. After months of tireless training, testing, and retraining, Geppetto unveiled his masterpiece: he named his son affectionately Pinocchio.

Pinocchio’s LLM was no ordinary ML model. Geppetto had created this model using cutting-edge algorithms and trained on a vast ocean of data, allowing Pinocchio to interact with people who would talk to him like any other human child. Geppetto knew that with great power comes great responsibility. He was not sure if Pinocchio would maintain ethical behavior with time, especially as he began playing with other boys in their community.

He then added a unique feature to Pinocchio’s algorithm: if he ever hurt the sentiment of anyone, is unfair to people, is partial to anyone, his nose would grow by an inch.

Pinocchio made friends with other children around his house. He was a sensation, marveled everyone with his ability to understand and know anything and everything. Children started taking Pinocchio’s help for their homework.

However, as time progressed, a trend emerged among some groups of students. They began to use Pinocchio for amusement, they started telling him stereotypical and biased stories about certain cultures. Although Pinocchio was trained on a diverse dataset, his continuous learning feature started to weigh more, leading to a drift in his behavior.

As days passed, Geppetto observed Pinocchio’s nose steadily extending. One day, when Pinocchio came back from playing all day, the length of his nose had increased to such an extent that Geppetto was struck with astonishment upon seeing him. Geppetto realized that it was time to make Pinocchio “Responsible”.

One day, a little girl named Meenu, who was of Indian origin, came to visit Pinocchio. She wanted to blend in by wearing Italian clothes.

Meenu asked Pinocchio how she looked, but he, failing to grasp the potential hurtfulness of his words, responded with laughter, “What have you done? You look like a pizza topped with curry and chutney.” Once again, his nose began to extend.

This time, Geppetto introduced him to the concept of empathy and the power of constructive feedback. Pinocchio learned to temper his responses, offering guidance that was not only accurate but also considerate of people’s feelings.

As seasons went by, Pinocchio’s fame grew not only among the children but among the adults too. Women took fashion advice from him while some took recipe ideas. Men sought his wisdom in craftsmanship and storytelling.

Pinocchio’s influence extended beyond personal advice to community endeavors. He led environmental initiatives, encouraging the village to adopt more sustainable practices, from planting trees to reducing waste.

One evening, while Pinocchio was returning from his evening play, Uncle Fabrizio, Geppetto’s niece approached him. Fabrizio had a Gelato shop in their neighborhood for which he needed extra hands — enthusiastic apprentices who could learn the art of gelato making under his guidance. He wanted Pinocchio, the trusted advisor in the community, to help draft an apprenticeship contract that would outline the apprentice’s duties, training, and the employer’s expectations.

Pinocchio realized that he is not trained for helping people on legal related activities. He was aware that his knowledge had gaps.

Despite knowing that an apprentice contract was a legally binding document necessitating a lawyer’s review and approval, he chose to remain silent.

By the time he made it back home, his nose had grown an inch longer.

Next day, Uncle Fabrizio went ahead with his plans, his shop buzzed with more life than before. This was until a concerned parent surfaced, clueless of their son’s apprenticeship. This jolted Pinocchio and Fabrizio to a stark realization — minors needed their guardian’s consent on paper, a critical oversight they missed. This omission could have led to significant legal and ethical issues for Uncle Fabrizio.

When Geppetto learnt about this incident, he taught Pinocchio about “Transparency”; admitting his limitations and being truthful to people, will build trust with them.

Geppetto also taught him the value of privacy, Pinocchio never shared secrets about his friends with others. Most importantly, Pinocchio realized the significance of accountability, always being ready to correct his mistakes and learn from them.

Geppetto, proud of the progress Pinocchio was making, saw his son become a symbol of Responsible AI.

Pinocchio became a role model for children and adults alike, teaching them the values of empathy, diversity, and ethics in a world increasingly influenced by AI.

As time went by, Pinocchio volunteered to lead workshops on digital literacy, explaining how algorithms work and why it’s important to understand the information we consume and share. Pinocchio’s adventures taught everyone that responsible AI is about more than just algorithms and data; it’s about considering the impact of technology on real lives and ensuring it acts in the service of well-being, fairness, and dignity for all.

And so, Geppetto and Pinocchio lived happily ever after, surrounded by a community that had learned to embrace the wonders of technology while upholding the values that make us truly human.

Responsible artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for aspects of making appropriate business and ethical choices when adopting AI. These include business and societal value, risk, trust, transparency, fairness, bias mitigation, explainability, sustainability, accountability, safety, privacy, and regulatory compliance. Responsible AI encompasses organizational responsibilities and practices that ensure positive, accountable, and ethical AI development and operation.

This fiction is inspired from the famous children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio.
